Gastroenterology, Celiac Disease, Food Allergies & Sensitivities

Dr. Pearson  was a leading integrative gastroenterologist and pioneer in integrative gastroenterology diagnosis and management.  He created new screening, monitoring, and treatment protocols that have changed lives for thousands of patients.

Dr. Pearson was the Chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Celiac Sprue Association for five years while he practiced in Tucson, Arizona.  Dr. Pearson provided training to other physicians and healthcare professionals on the diagnosis and management of celiac disease, as well as outreach programs such as the annual free celiac screening fair.

Dr. Pearson was the medical director of the first U.S. free celiac screening fair that included comprehensive celiac screening, including the newer Deaminated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) testing.  Dr. Pearson also provided lectures on celiac disease, food allergies, and food sensitivities.

In addition to celiac disease, Dr. Pearson is a leading physician in Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's disease, and other autoimmune conditions, including Hashimoto's thyroidits, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Lupus.  Since all autoimmune conditions are immunological conditions and since the small intestines houses over 75% of our immune system, he has created holistic treatment plans treating the root cause of disease, while treating the whole person.

Dr. Pearson is one of the first physicians in the U.S. to use blood IgE Food Allergy and IgG Food Sensitivity testing with patients.  Since over 75% of our immune system is in our small intestines, he believes food allergies and sensitivities should be tested in patients with GI complaints, autoimmune disease and other chronic illnesses.  Allergies and sensitivities can wear down an immune system and cause an selective immunoglobulin deficiency or cause a hyperreaction of the immune system, as seen in autoimmune conditions.  In chronic disease, you want to remove as many obstacles to cure as you can to help the body heal itself.

Dr. Pearson developed a PsychoNeuroGastroEndoImmunology (PNGEI) model describing the interdependence of these systems and their role in health and disease. Dr. Pearson's model emphasizes the tremendous impact the intestinal tract has on our nervous, immune, and hormone systems - as it contains 80% of our serotonin and over 75% of our immune system. Dr. Pearson's PNGEI approach has helped patients recover from chronic illnesses including psychiatric issues, immune dysfunction, and nervous system disorders.

Transgender Care

For over ten years, Dr. Pearson worked with transgender men and women at various stages of the transition process. Gender dysphoria, formerly referred to as Gender Identity Disorder, describes the mental, emotional and physical aspects of a human being's identified gender role.

In a society where male and female are the predominant, and often only, gender labels available, gender dysphoria, transgenderism, and transsexualism are often dismissed as a "real" gender label.  It is my mission to help individuals become the people they feel they are on the inside.

Dr. Pearson's integrative endocrinology and psychological counseling experiences with people from all walks of life have helped him develop the best male-to-female (MTF) and female-to-male (FTM) hormone protocols.  Dr. Pearson's ground breaking work in transgender hormone therapy minimizes almost all of the undesired side effects commonly found in transgender hormone therapy.

A key to successful transgender hormone therapy is the use of bioidentical hormones.  Dr. Pearson never prescribes synthetic estrogen such as Premarin or synthetic progestin such as Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (MPA), as these synthetic hormones cause liver damage, increase risk of heart attack and stroke and cause many of the undesired side effects.  Dr. Pearson only uses bioidentical hormones, hormones that are molecularly identical to those hormones naturally produced in the human body.  There are many under educated doctors prescribing synthetic hormones, even after the WHI study that showed Premarin, a synthetic estrogen made from horse urine, increases the risk of breast cancer.  This is unacceptable.

Another unique cornerstone to Dr. Pearson's approach is the use of topical bioidentical hormones.  Topical application of hormones allows the hormones to circulate throughout the body before they are broken down in the liver.  Oral hormone pills go directly from the stomach to the liver, decreasing the effectiveness and often causing liver inflammation and increased liver enzyme levels, signifying liver damage.

Dr. Pearson also avoids injectible hormones as they are often dosed once or twice a week, causing an rapid increase and rapid decrease in blood hormone levels, often leading to mood swings, blood sugar issues, and liver inflammation due to the large dose at one time.  Topical application of any hormone on a daily basis provides consistent blood levels of circulating hormones, giving the patient a better sense of well-being as well as better results.
